I’ve grown up in the baptist church all my life. I’ve attended Sunday School, watch nights, revivals, choir workshops, choir anniversaries, bible study, etc. I can also say that growing up I realized that therapy didn’t get respect in the black church community. The answer to everything was “just pray about it.” I can understand if some don’t know proper information about therapy but still respect it. However, most older generations in the black community think therapy is for crazy people, the weak minded, or that it’s rebuking the power of God. I’m here to say that the church has to stop rebuking therapy.
Therapy is another tool to help people get through obstacles in life. I’ve been in therapy for 4 years. I started therapy to help me navigate a tough season in my life and I kept going to church as well. God is the creator of all things and therapists were created for a reason. I am forever thankful to God for all the wonderful things He has done in my life. One of things I’ll always be grateful for is the ability to seek therapy. I truly believe that if our community would accept and seek therapy we could stop the stigma. Mental health is such a taboo topic in our community and it’s time for the conversations to be had. We owe it to the future generations to break cycles and become better. I love God and I love therapy.
XOXO,
A Flawed and Fabulous Woman
